iodine tablets

Iodine is a trace mineral that is used to support the health of the thyroid and to help fight certain disorders in the body. Iodine has other additional benefits as well. It helps to promote healthy teeth, hair, skin, energy and it also used to purify water. Since water is known to contain many pollutants, iodine tablets are used to purify water that may contain viruses, giardia, bacteria and other harmful micro-organisms.

Treating your drinking water with iodine is an effective method to remove such impurities from the water. To reduce side-effects from drinking untreated water, it is recommended that two iodine tablets can be used to treat a quart of water. Unlike using a water filter, iodine tablets present less complication because they can be easily dissolved when the water is cold. These tablets can neutralize the bad taste, odor and color of the water.

If you suffer from an iodine deficiency, it is a wise choice to supplement with this essential trace mineral. The health and proper functioning of the thyroid gland depends on the amount of iodine that you ingest on a daily basis. Research has shown that iodine is a component of a major hormone produced in they thyroid gland called thyroxin. The thyroid gland is responsible for maintaining proper metabolism in the body. Adequate amounts of iodine are also essential for the proper physical growth and mental development of children. Since 75 percent of iodine is stored in the thyroid gland, a deficiency of this nutrient can be noted by a hoarse throat, mental impairment, dry skin and fatigue.

The Recommended Daily Allowance of Iodine Tablets

Too much iodine in the body can actually cause the thyroid to become enlarged and you may also develop goiter problems. In order to prevent side-effects, adults are recommended to take 150 mcg of iodine per day. High quality iodine tablets are produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered establishments. The iodine tablets should not contain sugar, starch, gluten, silica or artificial ingredients that may reduce the quality of the supplement. The best iodine tablets are enteric coated and they are easily digested into the blood stream.

I never thought of iodine much before. Thanks for making me aware. However, I hope there are safeguards to ensure the safety of iodine tablet users. As you've mentioned too much iodine can cause goiter.
